NEC PC-98 vs Windows 98 vs NEC PC-98NX vs DOS-V vs MS-DOS vs PC-98 DOS vs FMV-T
- NEC PC-98 uses PC-98 MS-DOS versions and PC-98 Windows versions.
- MS DOS computers use regular MS DOS versions and regular Windows versions.
- DOS-V computers are just machines sold in Japan that work with regular DOS / Windows versions.
- NEC PC-98NX computers series are all DOS-V machines and use regular DOS / Windows versions.
- Fujitsu FMV Towns series are all DOS-V based hybrid machines that work with regular DOS / Windows versions. The FM Towns side will only work with FM Towns MS Dos / Windows versions.
- PC-98 MS-Dos / Windows will not work on MS-DOS or DOS-V machines.
- Regular Windows drivers will crash most PC-98 Windows 98 systems, same for FMV-T.
- PC-98 Windows 98 drivers will crash most regular Windows 98 systems, same for FMV-T.
- MS DOS will work on DOS-V machines.
- DOS-V will work on MS Dos machines.
- FM Towns DOS will not work on DOS-V, regular DOS or PC-98.
- Regular PCI cards (USB, LAN etc...) will work on DOS-V machines and sometimes on PC-98, also some PCI graphic cards can be patched to work on PC-98 systems.
- Some PC-98 PCI cards work on regular DOS and DOS-V systems, then its stated on the box most of the time. Same for PCMCIA cards.
- C-Bus cards only work on PC-98, there is simply no slot on DOS / DOS-V machines, also no drivers.
- There is no ISA slot on PC-98 computers.
- Most Windows 98 programs / games / tools for all of these systems work on all machines. Thats why most of them are labeled „for Towns / PC-98 / DOS-V on the box“.
