neXGam: Zunächst einmal, stell Dich bitte unseren Lesern vor.

Saru: Hi!

neXGam: Erzähl uns was zum Spielprinzip.

neXGam: Die Grafik wirkt sehr abwechslungsreich.

The interview - part 1 (English)

Henshin_Engine_nexgam_07

neXGam: First of all, please introduce yourself.

Saru: Hi! I’m Saru. I’m an artist that loves retro video games. I love to draw and get many of my influences from video games and anime. I’ve worked on some other projects like Osu! (an online music game) as well as some mascot designs for some other things. Right now, I am working with a group of talented individuals on Henshin Engine: The Game.

neXGam: For those unfamiliar with the web comic, what is Henshin Engine about?

Saru: Henshin Engine is the story of gaming-gal Yuki Shirokawa who just started an apprenticeship for the Jipang Electronics Corporation (JEC). Her favorite gaming console is the FX Engine (based on the PC Engine), a product of JEC. She stumbles upon a special FX Engine prototype that allows her to make a nuerological connection with and is transported into the gaming world.

Henshin_Engine_nexgam_01neXGam: Now you are taking it to the next level producing an actual PC Engine CD game based on the character. How did that come about? Coding on old systems is not an easy task.

Saru: The idea to make the game was always something that was in the back of my mind since the creation of the comic but did not have anyone to program the game when the idea came about. Fortunately, we now have a very talented programmer by the name of Nodtveidt who has also programmed a released homebrew by the name of Mysterious Song and is currently doing the PC Engine programming of our game. We are fortunate to have him helping us and we have made great progress with the PC Engine version thanks to him.

neXGam: Tell us something about the gameplay. From what I have seen it seems like a classic action platformer.

Saru: The gameplay is something that is based on the kinds of games you would see during the time of the golden days of the PC Engine. The main inspirations for the game are titles such as Valis, Shubibinman (Shockman) and to some extent, the Wonder Boy series and classics like PC Genjin (Bonk).

Henshin_Engine_nexgam_05neXGam: How do you balance difficulty? Will it be tough as nails as was often the case in the PC Engine's lifespan, or do you take into account modern gaming habits. For example savegames and the likes.

Saru: As it stands, many people who've played the game at shows or who've downloaded the demo state that the game is hard, but not totally unforgiving. It really depends on the player, we have some people who blast through the 3-stage demo with little to no trouble, and some individuals who claim it's one of the hardest games they have ever played (haha). So it's a mixed bag ;) - As far as saving goes, we may take advantage of the backup RAM.

Henshin_Engine_nexgam_04

neXGam: The graphics look very varied. The beach level reminds me a lot of Wonder Boy in Monster World. What is your inspiration for the themes? Are they intentional nods to classic games?

Saru: Yes, very intentional. As the premise of the game requires Yuki to bounce from game world to game rowld ridding the game of whatever bug is making it corrupt. This is where Yuki's nemesis, Ultra Drive Unit: Geni, comes in to play.

neXGam: Are there any ideas you had to scrap because of the hardware limitations?

Saru: Some things that come to mind were things like parallax and the over size of stages. Much thought has to be put into things like level design and arrangement ahead of time. So far, Nodtveidt has had very little trouble implementing the majority of our ideas and few things were sacrificed so long as we keep in mind the limitations of what the console is capable of.

Henshin_Engine_nexgam_06

neXGam: You are offering ports to other consoles like the Genesis via stretchgoals. A PC Engine based character on the competitors' systems ... blasphemy?

Saru: I believe the Genesis/Mega Drive and Dreamcast are the only two consoles we'd consider porting this game to, since one of the main characters is based on a Mega Drive. It may seem blasphemous, but without giving away too many spoilers, the end of the game will explain some things, making the appearance of Henshin Engine on SEGA hardware less weird (at least I hope!)

neXGam: Will the game be available for sale on PC Engine after the Kickstarter, or is that the only chance for fans to get it?

Saru: It will be available after the Kickstarter in limited quantities depending on how the Kickstarter goes and what we have left since we are producing a certain amount of each. The campaign is basically a way to pre-order and guarantee you get a copy.

neXGam: At the moment, the game is for PC Engine CD and PC only. Why not offer a HuCard version too? Of course the music would have to be redone, but is there a chance for that in the future? Quite a few people do not have a CD drive.

Henshin_Engine_nexgam_02Saru: Currently, there are no plans to port the game to HuCard as many aspects of the game would have to be re-written. Outside of size constraints, we would also have issues with the music, as you mentioned as well as graphical limitations. Although, a HuCard version is something we are heavily considering! if we do go that route, a Mega Drive cartridge version may also be a possibility. It really comes down to how people receive this game initially, we don't want to spread ourselves to thin just yet.

neXGam: Will it be a professionally pressed CD?

Saru: Yes, the CD will be professionally pressed and will include a spine card similar to that of the Henshin Engine physical demo that some have received. More info on those can be found on the Facebook page for Henshin Engine as well.
